Former Manchester United boss José Mourinho was frustrated at the club for not signing a defender in the summer transfer window.
The 55-year-old Portuguese manager revealed in July that he had handed the United board a five-man transfer list after he had already signed Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant.
The Red Devils failed to land a central defender in the summer, with Jérôme Boateng and Diego Godín emerging as two targets for Mourinho.
However, Ed Woodward was not keen to allow the former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss from making a move for the Bayern Munich star.
According to ESPN, United’s executive vice-chairman stopped a transfer for the 30-year-old German because of his injury record.
That’s right, Woodward did not want to match the club’s price tag for the player.
In fact, it is also reported that he did not want a repeat of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Owen Hargreaves, both of whom came from Bayern Munich and endured injury-blighted stints at Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who was appointed as caretaker manager on Wednesday, will receive a transfer budget in January to reinforce his current United squad.
