Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s brilliant run as Manchester United manager came to a shuddering halt as two second half goals for PSG gave them a 2-0 win the Champions League last 16.
Under Jose Mourinho Manchester United were pretty lucky to get into the knockout stages of the Champions League but they’d been really unlucky to draw PSG in the last 16 of the competition.
That was back in December and the Premier League side were seen as massive underdogs but a lot had changed since then and, with United undefeated in 11 games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and PSG having lost both Neymar and Edinson Cavani to injury, the Red Devils were suddenly looking good for a shock result against the Ligue 1 champions.
United played well in the first half but lost both Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard to injury at half time and without two of the men integral for their turnaround they struggled in the second half.
PSG scored twice through Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe, with both goals being set up by the hated former United winger Angel di Maria, to win 2-0.
Paul Pogba picked up a red card just as injury time was starting for a second yellow card that will be a blow for any chance of a comeback in the away leg in three weeks time.
Football fans on social media were certainly enjoying the evening:
Back in December everyone knew it was going to be a tough night for United, a bit of form and a couple of injuries for their opposition didn’t change the fact that PSG are very good, as they proved on Tuesday night.
