In the wake of rumors that Marvel Studios is pursuing an openly gay male lead for The Eternals, executive producer Victoria Alonso shared her belief that the world is ready for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first gay hero.
When the rumors were brought to her attention on the Captain Marvel red carpet, Alonso wouldn’t confirm or deny the report. “We are going to cast the best Eternals cast that we can and, when we’re ready to announce it, we promise you we will,” she told Variety.
“The world is ready, the world is ready,” she added when asked point blank if the world is ready for a gay superhero.
Alonso has executive produced every MCU film since 2012’s The Avengers and intends to do the same for The Eternals. She also co-produced Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger.
The Eternals will reportedly be going into production later this year, but concrete information regarding casting is scarce at this time. The Eternals were created by artist and writer Jack Kirby and first appeared in The Eternals comic series in 1976, though they were certainly never as popular as other superheroes owned by Marvel Comics. While theirs may seem like a wild concept, different elements of The Eternals, such as the concept of Celestials, have already been introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Directed by Chloé Zhao with a screenplay by Matthew and Ryan Firpo, The Eternals is expected to be released in theaters in 2020.
