A lecture about drinking less and eating better is the usual lot of millions of middle-aged Britons on learning they have high blood pressure. Now Greek doctors have some altogether more pleasing advice: have an afternoon nap.

A regular lunchtime sleep lowers blood pressure by almost as much as some drugs, their study suggests.

Those in the habit of recharging their batteries during the day had blood pressure so much lower that it is likely to benefit the heart, the research found.

The scientists raised the intriguing suggestion that the vaunted Mediterranean diet may owe its well-known health benefits not just to the olive oil such countries have with lunch but the siesta they have after it.
