Marcello Lippi believes Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso has proved that ‘he isn’t just grit, he’s done the most that could be done.’

Lippi turned 71 on Friday, and the legendary Juventus and Italy Coach was asked about Gattuso, as well as Max Allegri, Carlo Ancelotti and Azzurri successor Roberto Mancini.

“With the results he’s picked up, there’s no need to defend him,” he told Radio Sportiva.

“We’re both Tuscan and he sees football from the bench very well. He knows what needs to be done and when to change.

“He’s the right person for any team in the world and there’s no doubt that Napoli needed a prestigious Coach after Sarri.

“Now he has to fix what broke last night. Napoli have some excellent players, but they have to do much more than they did last night.

“Gattuso’s a fantastic guy and someone like him can do anything. He’s shown he isn’t just grit, anger or malice but that he also possesses technical and tactical competence, and at Milan he’s done the most that could be done.”

Lippi led Italy to World Cup glory in 2006, and he admits he still watches back the Nazionale’s triumph.

“I’ve happened to watch back so many videos of it on YouTube, and when I see these images there’s always some emotion,” he continued.

“Yesterday I was at Coverciano, and seeing all the photos of that World Cup fills me with emotion.

“Winning a World Cup with your own national team has no equal. In the past, when there were still so many foreigners in our League, Totti, Nesta, Del Piero came through.

“Mancini’s done very well to integrate this new generation of champions into the national team.”
