Cagliari Coach Rolando Maran ‘trusts the referees’ but admits he is still disappointed about his dismissal against Napoli last week.
The 55-year-old was sent to the stands for complaining about a handball decision during the Sardinians’ 2-1 defeat to the Partenopei, so his assistant Christian Maraner will take his place in the dugout tomorrow.
“Of course, I would like to be with the team,” said Maran at a Press conference.
“But never mind, Maraner will lead them out. He and I work very closely together, and he will know what I want the players to do.
“I’m sorry, but these aren’t normal incidents and it isn’t the first time I’ve been sent off.
“I didn’t insult anyone or use disrespectful words. I just had the feeling that we suffered an injustice with the awarding of the penalty.
“With VAR we know it is an instrument to be used by the referee and his assistants, but we on the sidelines never know what images they are looking at.
“I trust the referees, the Italian ones are well prepared but suffer from too much pressure.
“In general, I believe VAR is of great help and has reduced the number of errors in the game.”
Cagliari host Lazio at the Sardegna Arena on Saturday, needing just one point to ensure their mathematical safety.
“Lazio are one of the best Italian teams, they are a little bit further down the table than they should be, but they have reached the Final of the Coppa Italia.
“They are a team who suck you in and then hit you on the counterattack, so the game won’t be easy.
“Still, we have the right motivation to get back to winning ways and finish as high up in the table as possible.
“On Monday I analysed the game with Napoli and talked about it with the players. Our objective is to grow and not just look at results.
“We need to analyse our performances in a rational way and understand where we have to improve. It is a job we do after both victories and defeats.
“We left the San Paolo with our heads held high, we gave everything and our performance was excellent. It was a match that gave us a lot of strength.”
