Her character Madeline Martha Mackenzie on Big Little Lies juggles co-parenting with keeping her previous affair with a local theatre producer secret.
Despite being reluctant at first, the 43-year-old, who co-produces the series with Nicole, said she’s come to love playing ‘a mother trying to do the best she can’.

‘I’ve always had fun playing Madeline even though I was reluctant to play the character initially,’ Reese told BW.
‘It was Nicole who talked me into playing her, and I’m so glad she did,’ the mother-of-three added.
‘She’s a mother trying to do the best she can, so playing her is kind of like second nature to me.’

Reese’s character Madeline is married to Ed Mackenzie (Adam Scott), and shares custody of a daughter with Nathan Carlson (James Tupper).
She is also keeping secret a previous affair with a local theatre producer Joseph Bachman (Santiago Cabrera).
Big Little Lies, based on the book by Liane Moriarty, follows the lives of five women who struggle with motherhood, marital issues and judgment in their upscale neighbourhood in California.
The series stars Reese, Nicole, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz and new addition Meryl Streep.

Speaking with Fox News at the season two premiere in New York on Thursday, Reese said it was ‘different’ working predominantly with women.
‘It was just different. I never really had that opportunity in my career,’ she explained.
‘Laura, Nicole and I would look around and go, ‘I can’t believe we have so many scenes together, that we have so many lines with each other, that we’re exploring our relationships.’
‘Hopefully that will create more shows that do that same,’ Reese added.
Season two of Big Little Lies premieres June 9 on HBO and June 10 on Foxtel
