6 Disturbing Revelations From Jeffrey Epstein’s Court Documents

The Southern District of New York unsealed its indictment against billionaire Jeffrey Epstein Monday. Already a registered sex offender, Epstein faces one count of sex trafficking and one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking for crimes allegedly committed in New York City and Florida.

Epstein is accused of molesting underage girls who he paid to give him massages, and then paying them to recruit other girls to do the same. In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s office accused him of creating “a vast network of underage victims for him to sexually exploit, often on a daily basis.”

While some details of the accusations against Epstein are known thanks to dogged investigative reporting and similar charges he faced in 2008, newly released court documents, including an indictment and bail memo, contain new revelations. Here are six of them:

The indictment says Epstein “intentionally sought out — and knew that he was abusing — minors.” Some of the girls were as young as 14, and Epstein knew this, prosecutors allege, because they “expressly told him.”

While Epstein sometimes set up appointments with his victims, he had help, too, according to prosecutors. He “worked and conspired with others, including employees and associates who facilitated the conduct by, among other things, contacting victims and scheduling their sexual encounters with Epstein,” the indictment reads. Prosecutors identified three employees who allegedly set up appointments with victims to “engage in paid sex acts with Epstein.”

Epstein’s victims in New York City and Palm Beach, Florida, were paid hundreds of dollars to bring him new victims. The indictment says this was done to “ensure a steady stream” of minor victims.

Why? Because Epstein owns homes in New York City, Palm Beach, New Mexico, Paris, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he owns a whole island. He also has access to two private planes and owns 15 cars, including “seven Chevrolet Suburbans, a cargo van, a Range Rover, a Mercedes-Benz sedan, a Cadillac Escalade, and a Hummer II,” according to the bail memo.

After Epstein was arrested over the weekend, police searched his New York City mansion and found a trove of evidence of his crimes, including “lewd photographs of young-looking women or girls,” and “evidence consistent with victim recollections” that serves to strengthen “the evidence of the conduct charged in the Indictment,” the bail memo says.

Some of the photographs law enforcement found in Epstein’s home were on CDs that were kept in a locked safe. The handwritten labels made it clear what was contained on the discs. According to the bail memo, the labels said, “‘Young [Name] + [Name],’ ‘Misc nudes 1,’ and ‘Girl pics nude.’”

The Women’s World Cup final drew huge ratings, more justification for equal pay

In the United States, Sunday’s US women’s national soccer team victory in the 2019 World Cup ranked as one of the highest-rated soccer telecasts in the history of the sport.

Overnight ratings from Nielsen showed that the US-Netherlands match averaged a 10 household rating and a 27 share, meaning that 27% of all the TVs in use at the time were tuned to Fox for the face-off.

Trump Again Lashes Out at Fox News for Not Sufficiently Adoring Him

His relationship with his favorite news network is growing fraught.

Exactly what you’d expect from Kobach

Kris Kobach appears to be running for U.S. Senate and to have launched his campaign by misspelling his own name.

A campaign committee named Kobach for Senate filed with the Federal Election Commission Monday morning, hours before Kobach was scheduled to give a speech in Leavenworth, where he is expected to kickoff his campaign.

But the FEC filing initially spelled the former Kansas secretary of state’s name as “Chris,” an inauspicious start to his campaign to replace retiring Republican Sen. Pat Roberts.

After blowing the Kansas governor’s race, anti-immigration zealot Kris Kobach might try for the senate

Kris Kobach is telling supporters to gather in Leavenworth Monday afternoon, fueling speculation that he could be preparing a run for the U.S. Senate.

The former Kansas secretary of state has hinted at his interest in retiring Republican Sen. Pat Roberts’ seat for months, but he could face opposition from national Republican groups if he enters the race.

Kobach sent out a news release Monday morning announcing a 1 p.m. speech at the Leavenworth Riverfront Community Center. The release did not not specify whether Kobach would be making a campaign announcement, but the email was sent from an account linked to his old campaign website.

Another leadership shakeup at the top of the military

A four-star admiral due to take over as the Navy’s top officer on Aug. 1 will instead retire, the service announced Sunday night, citing his interactions with a subordinate accused of acting inappropriately toward female officers.

Adm. William Moran, the vice chief of naval operations, said in a statement that he will decline his appointment as the next chief of naval operations.

The officials said the issue emerged after recent Freedom of Information Act requests were made that will lead to scrutiny of Moran’s correspondence with Cmdr. Chris Servello, who was removed from his position as the spokesman for Adm. John Richardson, the chief of naval operations, in August 2017.

The service substantiated allegations that Servello drank heavily at a holiday party at the Pentagon while dressed in a Santa Claus costume and acted inappropriately toward women.

The sports-ification of politics continues apace

CNN will conduct a live draw to determine which night each candidate will appear in the highly anticipated Democratic presidential primary debates airing later this month on the network.

Dana Bash, Don Lemon and Jake Tapper will moderate the Democratic National Committee-sanctioned debates over two nights, July 30-31, from Detroit, said a network spokesperson. Both nights will air live exclusively on CNN and CNN en Español. The debates will also be simulcast on CNN International.

Thanks, but we’re already chock full of wildcard candidates

Tom Steyer, the billionaire environmental activist who toyed with a 2020 presidential run before deciding against it, has told people he plans to announce that he’s entering the race for the Democratic nomination, according to three people familiar with his plans. Steyer had said in January that he was passing on a 2020 run.

Steyer held a private conference call last week to announce to people who work for Need to Impeach, NextGen America and Steyer’s Sacramento office that he was planning to run, according to one of the people.

A Marianne Williamson position we fully support

Author and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson’s campaign used a fundraising email sent out Sunday to help one of her primary opponents garner enough donors to qualify for the next round of debates.

Williamson’s campaign email Sunday asked recipients to support former Sen. Mike Gravel (D-Alaska), who is roughly 10,000 individual donors short of the threshold to qualify for the next round of Democratic debates, slated to be held at the end of July.

“You may not have heard of him because he hasn’t yet qualified for any debates,” the email reads, referring to Gravel. “But his voice is important.”

This is separate from Manhattan federal prosecutors’ probe into the inaugural committee’s fundraising

A federal grand jury in New York is investigating top Republican fundraiser Elliott Broidy, examining whether he used his position as vice chair of President Donald Trump’s inaugural committee to drum up business deals with foreign leaders, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press and people familiar with the matter.

A wide-ranging subpoena the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn recently sent to Trump’s inaugural committee seeks records relating to 20 individuals and businesses. All have connections to Broidy, his investment and defense contracting firms, and foreign officials he pursued deals with — including the current president of Angola and two politicians in Romania.

Prosecutors appear to be investigating whether Broidy exploited his access to Trump for personal gain and violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which makes it illegal for U.S. citizens to offer foreign officials “anything of value” to gain a business advantage. Things of value in this case could have been an invitation to the January 2017 inaugural events or access to Trump.

Apparently the ‘Javanka Special’ isn’t an unappetizing diner offering

The president is giving a speech on the environment on Monday. And some people think that’s a little weird.

What we’re hearing: Two senior administration officials told Axios they were surprised when they first heard that President Trump would be giving a speech about his administration’s “environmental leadership.” Both said the president probably won’t win a public debate on environmentalism, given he’s spent much of his time in office proudly repealing President Obama’s environmental regulations.

“I don’t know why we’d spend any time talking about their issue,” one of the senior officials told Axios. By “their,” the source meant Democrats. The other official described the speech as a “Javanka Special” (a phrase some conservative administration officials use to describe liberal moves they blame on Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump).
