Montella: 'Courageous Fiorentina'

Vincenzo Montella wants to see “the same aggressive and courageous” Fiorentina approach when they visit Genoa.

It kicks off on Sunday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT), click here for a match preview.

Both teams had dramatic season openers, the Viola losing 4-3 to Napoli and Genoa fighting back for 3-3 at Roma.

“I expect Fiorentina to respond with the same aggressive and courageous attitude shown against Napoli,” said Montella in his Press conference.

“If we’d been a little more clinical and experienced, maybe we wouldn’t have lost it when going to 3-3. The enthusiasm and passion made us lose our balance, but these are risks we know that we will run.

“We’ve got clear ideas, over the summer we decided to bet on our young lads and are now introducing players who are functional to the project, helping the ‘kids’ to grow. The more players arrive, the better, as I prefer to have too much choice rather than too little.

“We need the best Fiorentina, because Genoa are a tough side to beat. Franck Ribery isn’t ready to start yet, but there is the chance he could come off the bench again.

“Martin Caceres trained with the team and is in good shape. Dalbert is the new player in the best condition and he is capable of playing 90 minutes.”

Fiorentina’s 4-3 defeat to Napoli was also decided by an extremely controversial penalty, as Dries Mertens appeared to dive, but the VAR booth didn’t correct the referee.

“It’s good that the Referees Association acknowledged there was a mistake, a very serious one in the case of Mertens.”
