Aleksandar Kolarov’s penalty has given Roma the half-time lead, but Lazio hit the woodwork three times and the Giallorossi twice in an action-packed Derby.
The Aquile were favourites going in, having changed little since last season and won their opener 3-0 away to Sampdoria, whereas the Giallorossi were still getting to grips with their Coach Paulo Fonseca and personnel changes, drawing 3-3 with Genoa.
Leonardo Spinazzola and Diego Perotti were out injured, but Davide Zappacosta pulled out with a calf problem in the warm-up, so Alessandro Florenzi scrapped the experiment playing in the supporting trio and returned to right-back. Lucas Leiva returned from injury in place of Marco Parolo.
It was a dramatic start, as after 140 seconds Pau Lopez punched a corner to the edge of the area, where Leiva’s volley smacked the inside of the far post, then Federico Fazio dived in to stop Ciro Immobile meeting the rebound.
Incredibly, Roma also rattled the inside of the upright moments later, as Nicolò Zaniolo turned a midfielder to unleash a daisy-cutter from 20 metres out.
Lazio kept more of the possession, but when Edin Dzeko tried to chip a cross in from the edge of the box, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic had his hand unwisely raised and charged it down for a penalty. Aleksandar Kolarov kept his cool to send Thomas Strakosha the wrong way and give Roma the lead.
Immobile ducked down to get a glancing header on Senad Lulic’s cross, forcing a fingertip save from Pau Lopez, but the parade of uprights continued in a remarkable game.
Milinkovic-Savic flicked on a long ball to send Immobile clear through the middle and his half-volley thumped the top inside corner of the goal, bouncing back out.
Under 30 seconds later as the move continued, Tucu Correa hit the base of the same upright with an angled drive.
At the other end, Gianluca Mancini’s header from a corner was cleared off the line, then Zaniolo was denied by the woodwork for the second time in 27 minutes, his shot from the edge of the box almost perfect.
Luiz Felipe went off with a slight muscular issue, replaced by Bastos. Strakosha fingertipped a long-range Kolarov free kick over in first half stoppages.
