The Nerazzurri were aiming to maintain their perfect start to the Serie A season after four straight wins, but Lazio were unbeaten here since December 2016, emerging with three wins and a draw between League and Coppa Italia. Lautaro Martinez was rested in favour of Matteo Politano, with Stefano Sensi in a more advanced role, while Stefan Radu missed out after coming down with a fever. Romelu Lukaku’s little brother Jordan was also on the Lazio treatment table. The big change was Ciro Immobile left on the bench as punishment for a touchline row with Coach Simone Inzaghi.
The Inter defence was unusually shaky from the get-go, Handanovic on his 300th Inter appearance rushing off his line to smother at the feet of Felipe Caicedo.
However, the hosts took the lead thanks to a defensive howler, as Cristiano Biraghi’s cross to the back post found Danilo D’Ambrosio, with Jony Rodriguez seemingly unaware he was right next to him, allowing the header from four yards.
Moments later, Lazio hit back and Handanovic flew to palm away a Tucu Correa snapshot, while Romelu Lukaku drilled just wide.
Correa wasted a golden opportunity to get Lazio back on level terms, as he dinked it over Handanovic and misplaced the finish. Moments later, he forced a sensational one-handed low save out of the goalkeeper after controlling Marco Parolo’s assist.
Handanovic was again on form, at full stretch to fingertip a Bastos effort out from the far bottom corner.
