FIFA President Gianni Infantino is torn over the future of San Siro. “There is nostalgia, but then look at Wembley Stadium.”

Inter and Milan have announced plans to tear down the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and replace it with a new purpose-built arena next to the current site.

However, there have been protests from citizens, fans and the local authorities, who would prefer a restructuring of the iconic venue.

“You have to analyse the situation carefully,” Infantino told reporters at the Festival dello Sport in Trento.

“There is nostalgia for the old San Siro, but on the other hand, look at Wembley Stadium. That too was an historic arena, but it was reconstructed and in a few years has become even more iconic.

“If you set aside the nostalgia and memories of the city of Milan, then two very important clubs like Inter and Milan deserve one of the most beautiful stadiums in Europe.”
