Border alert as more migrants make it across Channel

Two more groups of migrants trying to reach Britain were rescued in the Channel today, bringing the total number of people detained since Christmas Day to 94.

The attempted crossings came as ministers were accused of allowing the UK to appear to be a “soft touch” for migrants because they are so distracted by Brexit that they are failing to ensure that the border is properly policed.

A boat containing four men — three Iranians and one Syrian — was recovered by the Border Force off the coast of Dover in the early hours of today.
