Coach Gian Piero Gasperini admitted Atalanta “still aren’t strong enough” to fight for European qualification after defeat to Genoa.
La Dea had been riding on some excellent results up to this point and were only three points away from fourth-placed Milan, but today’s 3-1 loss will dampen the hopes of the tifosi.
“We return home with the feeling we didn’t do our best to win the game,” Gasperini told Radio Rai after the final whistle. “We were unlucky at times, but we certainly did little to help ourselves.
“It’s a shame, because we threw away a good opportunity. Evidently, we still aren’t strong enough to keep fighting so high up in the standings.
“At times we had the game in control, and we were winning the individual duels. Then there were a few episodes that could have decided the game, like our missed penalty.”
Despite this result, Milan’s loss to Fiorentina means that Gasperini’s men are still within reach of fourth place, with Lazio leading by only four points.
“Everybody’s talking about the ‘European zone’ because the competition is so open, but if we keep playing so inconsistently, I doubt we’ll be able to keep up.
“We have to play Juventus, then Sassuolo on Saturday. Let’s close the first half of the season, and then we’ll evaluate where we are.”
