Sampdoria Coach Marco Giampaolo admits “the draw was the right result” as they were held by 10-man Fiorentina in a 3-3 thriller.
The Blucerchiati had taken the lead for the first time in the game with Fabio Quagliarella’s brace, but German Pezzella equalised with the last kick.
“We made too many mistakes, both in terms of technique and in our concentration,” Giampaolo told Sky Sport Italia.
“At half-time, I told my team that we’d played only to 30 per cent of our capabilities. I must’ve done something wrong in the build-up and training, because more than one player was struggling.
“It wasn’t the best Samp, yet we were still about to bring home the full three points. The final equaliser unfortunately was a microcosm of our issues, as defending so deep on a free kick that far away… My team knows how it is supposed to behave in certain situations.
“So we leave here with regrets, but at the same time acknowledge the draw was the right result. We had a few good moments, but could’ve done better.”
Quagliarella found the net for the 10th Serie A round in a row and is now just one off the all-time record set most recently by Gabriel Batistuta.
However, Giampaolo’s former Samp star Muriel also scored twice on his Viola debut.
“Luis seems a little heavy after the winter break, but he still has that remarkable technique.”
