Iachini: 'Empoli deserved a draw'

Beppe Iachini felt Empoli “deserved a draw” against Roma and the handling offence for the disallowed equaliser was “involuntary.”

This 2-1 defeat means the Tuscans are only one point clear of the relegation zone, as Bologna beat Cagliari on Sunday to close the gap.

“We were at the Olimpico against a quality team that defended well, so we had to move the ball quickly in order to create the spaces to run into,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We came close so many times and got the final ball wrong, so it’s disappointing. Plus Roma barely created anything, they only scored against us on set plays.

“I felt my team deserved something more, but are quite naïve. We are the eighth team in Serie A when it comes to creating attacking situations, but we concede far too many goals. We’ve got to make more of our chances and be more concentrated to avoid silly errors at the back that ruin performances.

“We made technical errors playing out from the back in the first half. I asked the lads to be more patient in picking the right pass and they did better.”

Empoli had scored for 2-2 with Rade Krunic, but it was disallowed for a Dimitri Oberlin handling offence, even though Juan Jesus seemed to kick it on to his arm.

“When the referee goes to look at the VAR, you know something happened. It’s a pity, I am told it was from very close contact and it seems very difficult to get out of the way in those situations. It seemed involuntary.

“Considering the way we played overall, I think the team would’ve deserved a draw.”
