Ken Berry, star of ‘F Troop,’ ‘Mama’s Family’ and ‘Mayberry R.F.D.,’ has died at 85

Ken Berry, the actor who starred in the TV shows “F Troop,””Mayberry R.F.D.” and “Mama’s Family,” has died at 85.

Actress Jackie Joseph-Lawrence, Berry’s former wife, took to Facebook to break the news Saturday: “With very deep sorrow, I must inform friends of Ken Berry that he died a short time ago.”

The actor died Saturday at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, hospital spokeswoman Patricia Aidem confirmed to The Associated Press. Berry’s cause of death hasn’t been released.

Berry was best known for playing clumsy Captain Parmenter in the western satire “F Troop” during the 1960s. His fellow co-star Larry Storch, who played Corporal Randolph Agarn, sent his condolences to his onscreen commander.

“Dear friends. We are sad to let you know our beloved Captain, Mr Ken Berry passed away tonight,” Storch wrote on his Facebook page. “We are at a true loss for words. Ken, we hope you know how much you were loved. Goodnight Captain. We miss you already.”

After “F Troop” concluded its two-season run in 1967, Berry went on to play widowed farmer Sam Jones on “The Andy Griffith Show” and its spinoff “Mayberry R.F.D.” The series ran for three seasons, from 1968 to 1971.

Berry also played Vinton Harper in “Mama’s Family,” a spinoff from “The Carol Burnett Show.” The series ran for six seasons after its 1983 debut, featuring Betty White, Vicki Lawrence and Rue McClanahan.

His other credits include TV’s “Ken Berry WOW Show” and “The Carol Burnett Show” and the films “Guardian of the Wilderness” and “The Cat from Outer Space.”

The Illinois native served in the U.S. Army special services, according to Variety, before turning to the show business after winning a slot on “The Ed Sullivan Show” during an Army talent competition.
