SPAL President Walter Mattioli felt they were “robbed” by the controversial VAR decisions and Fiorentina star Federico Chiesa “is untrustworthy.”
The game was all square at 1-1 when Chiesa was tackled at the by-line and the referee waved play on, so SPAL countered and scored to go 2-1 up with Mattia Valoti.
However, VAR was used to check on the previous challenge, decide Felipe had fouled Chiesa, so award a penalty to Fiorentina and rule everything that happened after that challenge null and void.
“We feel like it was robbed from under our noses,” Mattioli told reporters.
“There were incidents today that condemned SPAL to an undeserved defeat. I watched the incident back, very carefully, and if you are going to stop play and walk back everything that happened over the last five or six minutes for a ‘foul’ like that, then football becomes laughable.
“It’s not a clear foul, he maybe has his toe trodden on. We know that Chiesa is not a trustworthy person, he invents fouls out of nowhere, but we know that is his attitude.
“VAR got it wrong with us again, just as it did against Torino. The move should’ve been allowed to continue, as SPAL deservedly scored to take the lead.
“Our club cannot be treated this way, we’re being taken for fools.”
