Montella: Ajax inspire Fiorentina

Vincenzo Montella insists Fiorentina will have no ‘fear’ when they take on Juventus this weekend and that Ajax are the blueprint for his club.

Juve lost to SPAL last weekend and were eliminated from the Champions League by a youthful Ajax side, while Montella guided Fiorentina to a 4-2 victory over the Bianconeri back in 2014.

“We’ll face a disappointed but fierce Juve,” he said at a Press conference.

“They’ll be able to turn the page quickly, but we have to think about ourselves and do well for our future objectives. We’ll leave any fear at home.

“This game is something that the city of Florence really cares about. Our 4-2 win It is proof that anything is possible in football. It was a wonderful day.

“Saturday against Juventus will be an important match and then next Thursday we have a super important match in the Coppa Italia: this week will be decisive.

“We’re facing a strong team who have been winning for eight years and are used to getting back up. Big clubs know how to get up and turn the page quickly.

“I have to prepare the game to try to win and to prepare ourselves mentally for the next one, without thinking about our opponents.

“To get Ajax results, you need patience, which isn’t the case in Italy. We mustn’t look at immediate results.

“At Fiorentina there’s the will to create an identity and work on it over time. Not necessarily buying the best players gets you to the Champions League Final. Winning teams are built over time.”

The former Milan boss was then asked about Cristiano Ronaldo and Federico Chiesa.

“When I was coaching Milan, the possibility that Ronaldo would join the Rossoneri was being talked about,” he continued.

“With Messi he plays for who is stronger. Ronaldo is to be admired for how he works and the hunger he has, it’s extraordinary.

“Maybe Messi has more talent, but Ronaldo is a point of reference and an example for anyone who wants to be a footballer.

“Chiesa’s a complete, strong player who can play for clubs like Juve, City, Bayern and Liverpool, but today he’s still a Fiorentina player and that shouldn’t be forgotten.

“He’ll have to get used to the rumours. Chiesa’s ours!”
