Montella: Fiorentina need patience

Vincenzo Montella has called for patience at Fiorentina. “Tottenham Hotspur had six players playing for them from when we knocked them out…”

The Tuscan side welcome Milan to the Artemio Franchi tomorrow night and will be looking to halt a run of 13 games without a win – their worst run since the 1989-1990 season.

However, Montella noticed how six of Spurs’ players whom Fiorentina eliminated from the 2014-15 Europa League reached the Champions League Final on Wednesday.

“I’m not too concerned about the point that ensures our mathematical safety,” stated the Coach at a Press conference.

“What I am more worried about is that I don’t think I have ever lost four games in a row, not as a Coach nor as a player.

“We have to stick together to get ourselves out of this difficult period. We are still disappointed with last week’s result.

“Since I returned to Florence, the only game we haven’t performed well in was the defeat to Sassuolo. If we played as we did in the other games then we wouldn’t have lost that one.

“I honestly can’t explain our troubles in front of goal. We have players who have the quality to finish better than they have shown in recent games.

“Scoring twice in five matches is difficult to understand as we create so many chances. Luis Muriel and Giovanni Simeone are both lethal finishers, but it isn’t happening for them at the moment.”

In recent weeks Viola fans have been venting their frustrations, boycotting the first half of their game against Bologna and protesting outside the shoe shop belonging to the club’s owners.

“I love this city and have a good relationship with the fans, but I want to make one thing clear, these protests don’t help the team.

“Of course, everyone is free to express their feelings, but we could do with their help so we can give our maximum on the field.

“When I think about Tottenham Hotspur reaching the Champions League Final, I realised there were six players playing for them from when we knocked them out of the Europa League.

“Results like these can happen if you are patient and are allowed to build something over time, but in Italy we are rarely given that time.

“It takes years to build a strong team and, even then, winning is not guaranteed.”
