Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has fired out a clear warning to players that the club will be coming down hard on “celebrity behaviour.”
The Ligue 1 champions dominated their domestic league, but they were dumped out of the Champions League round of 16 after a sensational second-leg comeback from Manchester United.
Speaking to France Football, the 45-year-old Qatari businessman has made it clear that his players should focus more on their football than living the high life as celebrities.
“Players will have to assume their responsibilities even more than before. It must be completely different,” he explained.
“They will have to do more, work more.
“They are not there to please themselves.
“And if they do not agree, the doors are open. Ciao! I do not want to have any celebrity behaviour anymore.”
Neymar has caused quite the stir for his behaviour on and off the pitch in Paris.
The 27-year-old Brazilian ace came under fierce criticism last month after he attended Rihanna’s fashion party instead of watching Kylian Mbappé win his end-of-season awards.
And the ex-Barcelona star has had a tough time with Brazil as he was stripped of the captaincy and was ruled out of the Copa América after he ruptured his ankle ligament in a 2-0 friendly win against Qatar.
Al-Khelaifi’s warning to the PSG players follows on from the arrival of new sporting director Leonardo Araújo, who replaced Antero Henrique.
The French side are expected to be in for a busy summer in preparation for the new season and a serious challenge for the Champions League crown.
And the PSG president is thrilled at the return of Araújo and believes he will be perfect in landing Thomas Tuchel’s transfer targets.
“I realised that changes were essential, otherwise we were going nowhere,” he admitted.
“In two minutes, the case was settled between us, he will have all the sports powers.
“Leo, this is my guy. He is incredible. I have total confidence in him.
“His natural authority will do good for everyone, especially the player.”
Araújo, who worked at AC Milan as sporting director, is already engineering moves for Lazio’s Sergej Milinković-Savić and Italian star Gianluigi Donnarumma.
