Gonzalo Higuain has formally requested a transfer to Chelsea, according to Sky Sport Italia, but Milan and Juventus are in a complex situation.
“We have a very honest relationship, we say things to people’s faces. There is great honesty. When a player makes certain choices, it becomes difficult to convince him otherwise. One can try,” said Gattuso after last night’s 2-0 Coppa Italia win over Sampdoria.
“At this moment, he is a Milan player and we’re holding on tight. I don’t know what will happen. We are honest with each other and I want him to maintain this attitude, which has never been lacking thus far.
“I haven’t figured out what Higuain is unhappy with, because I see him look content and involved in the locker room atmosphere. We’ll see what happens. If it was up to me, I’d invite him to my house, lock him in a room and throw him food every two to three hours. Unfortunately, I can’t do that.”
This evening, Sky Sport Italia claim the situation has progressed to a formal transfer request, as Higuain wants to be reunited with his old Napoli Coach Maurizio Sarri.
It is not at all simple, though, because Milan are only midway through a season-long loan that cost €18m with an option to buy from Juventus in June for another €36m.
The Rossoneri have no intention of letting the Argentina international go without a suitable replacement.
Juve also want to be paid and turned down Alvaro Morata as part of an exchange deal.
It could be possible for Juventus to give Chelsea Higuain on an 18-month loan with obligation to buy, but that doesn’t resolve the Milan issue.
As Juventus and Milan face off in Jeddah for the Italian Super Cup on Wednesday, that will be the ideal opportunity for directors to sit down and discuss how to proceed.
