Leonardo Semplici couldn’t stay angry at Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret for his last-gasp saves against SPAL. “He’s like a son to me.”
Raul Albiol’s header decided the match, but in stoppages ex-SPAL goalkeeper Meret performed two fantastic reaction saves to keep the clean sheet.
“Alex is a lad we helped to grow, so he’s like a son to me,” said Semplici in a Press conference.
“I think he has the quality to become the first choice Italy goalkeeper. I wish him all the best in future, even if he disappointed me today with those saves. We can only tip our hats to him.
“We did fairly well in the first half, above all defensively, but had to take a few more risks after the break to chase the game. Then of course we ran into Meret having a fantastic afternoon.
“A draw here would’ve been an important result for us, but that’s the way it goes. We almost had the perfect performance.
“The race to stay in Serie A is tougher than ever this season, as so many teams have reinforced. We are nonetheless convinced we can achieve our objective.”
