Wayne Rooney Names His Preferred Premier League Title Winners

Wayne Rooney is like a lot of former Manchester United players in that he’d probably rather not have to pick between seeing Manchester City or Liverpool to win the Premier League but he has made his preferred choice.

Watching your rivals win the league can’t be fun for any fan or player and you start to pray that someone can stop them winning the league, but what about when it’s your two fiercest rivals battling for the title?

That’s the problem for Manchester United fans this season. There was a time that fans across the country prayed it was anyone but them winning the title and now they can do nothing but watch as Manchester City and Liverpool go for title glory.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently two points clear of Pep Guardiola’s team, although City have a game in hand, and could be on the verge of winning Liverpool’s first title in the Premier League era.

Whilst that’s not ideal for United it wouldn’t exactly fill them with joy to see their local rivals continue to show their recent dominance over the traditionally bigger side.

Speaking on TalkSPORT on Thursday former Everton and United captain Wayne Rooney, now plying his trade in the US for DC United explained why he’d prefer City to win, saying:

“It’s a great reason to be out the country when those two are going head to head for the title.

“I hope Man City get over the line before Liverpool. I couldn’t bear to see them win it, it would be a nightmare for any Evertonian.

I remember in 2005 they won the Champions League and they’re still talking about it now so it would be another 10 or 15 years of that!”

This is the closest that Liverpool have been to winning the league since 2014, when Steven Gerrard’s famous slip ended up starting the Reds downfall.

And nearly five years ago to the day Rooney’s former teammate Gary Neville described the choice between City and Liverpool as ‘having a choice of two blokes to nick your wife.’

United are faced with the possibility of Liverpool ending a near 30 year wait for a league title or City winning the league as part of a quadruple.

There’s nowhere for United fans and players to hide.
